Incense Burner

The earth used to make the Putsi, or incense burner,¬†comes from a single cave in Huichol Sierra known as the “Cave of Grandmother Growth.” Only certain women are allowed to harvest the moist earth from the cave in order to make these incense burners. The putsi is used to hold the copal incense, called “ukwa” in the Huichol language. During ceremonies the kopal is burned in the putsi in order to attract the spirits. Also, the men will smoke themselves before going on a hunt.
